New River Fly Fishing is owned and operated by veteran fishing guide Mike Smith, who has been fishing the New for over 30 years.  Besides guiding, Mike teaches fly fishing courses and is a fly designer for Flymen Fishing Company.  He is also the author of the Angler's Guide series which includes Fishing the New River Valley: an Angler's Guide and Fishing Virginia's Highlands: an Angler's Guide. 

Over the years, we have appeared in numerous magazines  including Fly Fish America (pictured with King Montgomery and Lefty Kreh). You can also find articles by Beau Beasley about fishing with us in Eastern Fly Fishing or catch our seminars at the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival.

Interested in learning to fly fish? We offer on the water fly fishing lessons at our private trout stream that cover basic casting, equipment, knots, reading water, mending techniques, presentation, and how to play and land fish. Rods and reels provided.
