Hello , welcome to the March edition of our newsletter!
It looks like spring is coming early this year, with daytime temperatures expected to be in the 70’s in the New River Valley for the foreseeable future. We’ve already had a fabulous start to our walleye season, and this will surely crank things up a bit. Over on the Smith River, trout should be looking up with the emergence of caddis and small black stoneflies. For the trophy hunter, our private trout water is loaded with big rainbows as well. Check out our website for more information.
Fishing Reports
Upper New River (above Claytor Lake): The New is flowing around 2600 cfs at Allisonia. Walleye fishing is in full swing now, so don’t wait any longer to book your trip or you will likely miss out on this year’s action. With the warm weather on its way, our spring smallmouth bass fishing will be heating up soon too, so book your trip today.
Lower New River (below Claytor Lake): The New is flowing around 3750 cfs at Radford. Muskie fishing is still the game for a few more weeks until they start moving into their spawning zones and we turn our attention to targeting trophy, pre-spawn smallies.
Smith River:We are seeing extremely low flows in Bassett (around 47 cfs) and thus are currently running wade trips only, which allows us to “head hunt” for larger surface-feeding brown trout in the lower river with dry flies. Nymphing will also be productive in deep buckets and pockets. There are only a few March dates left, so book now.
Private Trout Water: Both streamer and caddis dry fly fishing is hot! Limited spring dates available, so reserve your date today.
Hosted Trip: Our next group trip will be to Swain’s Cay Lodge located near the middle bight of South Andros Island, Bahamas in November. This area is renowned for its excellent flats fishing for bonefish and other species. There are only 4 spots left, so if you’re interested please give us a call or send a text for more information.
