Hello, welcome to the May edition of our newsletter!
As we move into mid-May, post-spawn smallmouth bass are beginning to transition into their summer patterns amid continued low-flow conditions. In fact, the entire region is currently experiencing a severe drought.
Despite the dry conditions, we had an outstanding pre-spawn season this spring, with several smallmouth bass exceeding the 22.5-inch mark. Our private trout water is also producing excellent action, with trophy rainbow trout aggressively feeding on dry flies.

Fishing Reports
Upper New River (Above Claytor Lake)
The Upper New River is currently flowing around 1,200 CFS at Allisonia. Water conditions remain low and exceptionally clear, making long casts essential for success.
Smallmouth fishing has remained steady, and we are still catching the occasional muskie. We’ll continue targeting muskie for only a few more weeks before pausing for the summer and resuming again in late October.
Most striped bass have already returned to the lake and are not expected back until fall.
Lower New River (Below Claytor Lake)
The Lower New River is running below average for this time of year at approximately 1,850 CFS in Radford.
Muskie fishing has been productive and should remain consistent for a few more weeks before we shift our full focus toward smallmouth bass for the summer season.
Topwater action is expected to improve significantly in June with the arrival of blue damsels.
Smith River
The Smith River continues to experience the effects of this year’s unusually dry conditions, with extremely low flows in Bassett currently sitting below 100 CFS.
Wade fishing conditions are excellent right now, and the combination of warmer weather and longer days should bring on the long-awaited sulphur hatch.
Private Trout Water
Our private trout stream is loaded with trophy rainbow trout.
If you enjoy watching large trout aggressively feed on dry flies, now is the perfect time to book a trip. Spring dates are limited, so reserve your spot today.
Hosted Trip
Our next hosted group trip will be to Swain’s Cay Lodge, located near the Middle Bight of South Andros, Bahamas.
