September News Blast

Hello, welcome to the September edition of our newsletter!

Robbie Dalton from Roanoke landed this 22 3/4″ smallie on the New River popper fishing with our guide, Alex, this past week. Great work fellas!

As September ushers in autumn, the cooler nights and shorter days give hints that fall is just around the corner. It is one of my favorite months for smallmouth bass fishing on the New River and the perfect time to catch trophy smallies while sight fishing low, clear water.

Over on the Smith River, wading can reward anglers with wild brown and stocked rainbow trout. Finally, our private trout water will reopen on September 15th.

Fishing Reports

Upper New River (above Claytor Lake):

The New is currently running around 1000 cfs above the lake at Allisonia. Sight fishing for smallies has been excellent.

As the water temperatures begin to drop, we will start targeting striped bass coming up from the lake so be sure to book your dates now!

Lower New River (below Claytor Lake):

The New is currently running at around 1150 cfs at Radford. Chartreuse or black poppers have been productive for big bass when dead-drifted along the shoreline.

Smith River:

The Bassett gauge is currently around 270 cfs. We are now running both wade and float trips on the Smith again.

Private Trout Water:

Our trophy trout water will be opening in two weeks so be sure to book your dates now!

Hosted Trip:

Our next group trip to Swain’s Cay Lodge located near the middle bight of South Andros Island, Bahamas in November is full with 10 anglers!
