October Newsletter

Hello , welcome to the October edition of our newsletter!

October is a fantastic month to fish in the New River Valley! Fall has officially arrived in the Blue Ridge and the foliage is brilliant. We are targeting trophy smallmouth and striped bass on streamers in the river, and have added muskie to the list of quarry. The private trout stream has also been stocked and is in play for trophy rainbow trout. To book a trip click here!

Fishing Reports

New River: The upper New is currently running just 1100 cfs at Allisonia and only 875 below the dam at Radford, which means it’s low and gin clear–conditions that require long casts to wary smallmouth putting on the feed bag for winter! Muskie are now on the prowl and can be found in a variety of areas of the river. In fact, we’ve already boated a couple of nice esox this season!

Smith River: Things will begin slowing down on the Smith, as Philpott Lake starts to turn over. The Smith is currently running 74 cfs below the dam, leaving wading as the only option.

Private Trout WaterThe cooler nights of late have dopped the water temperatures enough for us to load up the stream with stocked trout. Anglers can expect to find trophy-sized rainbow trout that are eager to take a fly! This is also a great place to take a fly-fishing lesson.

Now is an awesome time of year to fish in Southwest Virginia. We hope to see here real you soon!

All the Best,

Mike Smith | New River Fly Fishing
