September Newsletter

Hello , welcome to the September edition of our newsletter!

September on the upper New river is one of the best months of the year to target big fish. Not only are the smallies still looking up, but striped/hyrbrid bass migrate into the river from Claytor Lake as they begin their fall run. This beast was landed by one of our clients over Labor Day weekend. To book a trip click here!

Fishing Reports

New River: The New is currently running at 1300 cfs at Allisonia, which means it’s low and gin clear–perfect conditions for sight fishing to citation-sized smallies! The great topwater action we have been experiencing should continue well into October.

Smith River:Things will begin slowing down on the Smith, as the lake starts to turn over. The Smith is currently running 265 cfs at the Philpott dam.

South Fork of the Holston River (in Virginia): The hopper-dropper rig should be effective throughout the month on the South Fork.

Private Trout WaterThe cooler nights have dopped the water temperatures enough to begin stocking for fall next week. Anglers can expect fresh trophy-sized rainbow trout that are eager to take a fly!

Now is an awesome time of year to fish in Southwest Virginia. We hope to see here real you soon!

All the Best,

Mike Smith | New River Fly Fishing
